Like a Sunflower

On a trip to Kansas with a friend we saw a field of Sunflowers. I started talking about how I always wanted to have my photo taken in a field of sunflowers and he said “I read or heard that they follow the sunlight”. I said “wow that’s so cool I will have to blog about that for sure”.  I made myself a note and then forgot about this.

This morning I was thinking about somethings and remembered the sunflower.  I began to think about how dark the world around us appears to be getting and how we have to stay focused on the light.

John 8:12 Then Jesus spoke to them again, saying, “I am the light of the world. He who follows Me shall not walk in darkness, but have the light of life.”

I began to read about the sunflowers this morning and I found it so interesting.

“The flower head of a young sunflower tracks the arc of the sun as it moves across the sky, but the flower head of a mature sunflower typically faces east.”http://homeguides.sfgate.com/sunflower-move-73855.html

When we are young in the Lord we crave and are excited about everything we can soak up about God. We excitedly attend church, read His word and listen to anyone and and everyone we can that might shed “light” on who He is.   As we mature we become more steady and we stand strong in what we know to be the truth and the “light” in our life.

Have you ever driven past a field of sunflowers when the sun is shining on it?  It appears the entire field of flowers is radiating the light!!  When we are radiating His “light” we maybe a sunflower but we become a beam of His Light!!

Matthew 5:14-16 “You are the light of the world. A city that is set on a hill cannot be hidden. Nor do they light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on a lamp stand, and it gives light to all who are in the house. Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works and glorify your Father in heaven.

I have to say this was probably the fact that excited me the most that I learned this morning. ” Sunflowers in a field turn their flower heads in unison.” http://homeguides.sfgate.com/sunflower-move-73855.html

There is power in unity!  If one of those sunflowers refuses to follow the light and was to die it would start a chain reaction. When a plant begins to die and decay if it is not removed from the others the leaves and the stem that is dead sucks the life out of the plants around it.

Ephesians 4:11-15 And He Himself gave some to be apostles, some prophets, some evangelists, and some pastors and teachers, for the equipping of the saints for the work of ministry, for the edifying of the body of Christ, till we all come to the unity of the faith and of the knowledge of the Son of God, to a perfect man, to the measure of the stature of the fullness of Christ; that we should no longer be children, tossed to and fro and carried about with every wind of doctrine, by the trickery of men, in the cunning craftiness of deceitful plotting, but, speaking the truth in love, may grow up in all things into Him who is the head—Christ—

God wants us all to work together, using our individual, unique, and personal gifts. He wants us to bring the world the Truth in LOVE!

What is the truth you ask?  The same ONE who is the LIGHT of the World.

John 14:6 Jesus said to him, “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me.
Today my prayer is to be like the sunflower who hungers for and feeds off the “Light” then radiates it back for the world to see!
